Cost-effective machining of complex profiles

BLOHM is expanding its range of services to include profile grinding of rotors and worms

BLOHM is continuously expanding its machine park and in doing so, is further broadening its range of contract machining services. The manufacturing capabilities now available also include high-precision profile grinding of rotors and worms. Customers in the pump, transmission and compressor manufacturing sectors in particular can thus make use of a specialised manufacturing process without having to invest in the necessary machinery themselves.

One of the latest machines in the BLOHM machine park is a Klingelnberg profile grinding machine. In addition to internal and external cylindrical grinding, the specialists in precision components can now also grind complex rotor and worm profiles for their customers.

The process can be used for different quantities:
  • Prototypes

  • Single parts

  • Small batches

  • Mass production

Precise machining of complex geometries

Profile grinding is a fundamentally different machining process when compared with conventional cylindrical or surface grinding processes. Whilst conventional processes are primarily used to machine simple geometries, profile grinding produces complex profiles through the precise interaction of a profiled grinding wheel with synchronised multi-axis movements.
In this way, even complex geometries with very tight tolerances can be manufactured.

Application possibilities in various industrial sectors

Components machined using this method are used in various industrial sectors.

Rotors are used in e.g:

  • Screw pumps

  • Compressors

  • Metering pumps

  • Volume counters

Worm gear profiles are used in worm gear drives, which can be found in the following applications:

  • Hoisting equipment

  • Conveyor systems

  • Steering systems
A current example of a product manufactured by BLOHM is ground worm shafts for a customer from the transmission manufacturing sector. The raw parts are supplied by the customer. BLOHM then carries out the complete grinding of the worm profiles.

The Klingelnberg H10 enables machining in the micrometre range

BLOHM uses a Klingelnberg H10 for profile grinding. This machine can process workpieces with a maximum centre-to-centre distance of 900 millimetres and a machining length of up to 500 millimetres.

The technical capabilities include:

  • Between centre distances: up to 900 millimetres

  • Machining length: up to 500 millimetres

  • Free circle diameter: from 5 millimetres

  • Maximum outside diameter: 150 millimetres

Machining is possible with micrometre precision, depending on the geometry of the component in question. With the Klingelnberg H10, BLOHM is expanding its existing range of manufacturing services to include a specialised process for complex rotationally symmetrical components. This provides customers from a range of sectors with additional opportunities to have complex components manufactured cost-effectively.
